The Global Village is about families.

Global Village is an online network, designed to support families through pregnancy and the early stages of child rearing. Provided on iOS and Android devices, the Global Village has three years of planning, with parenting experts, health and IT professionals providing support.

What new or expecting parents might not know is that there is a whole world of parents who are struggling just as much as you might be. The question is, how do you connect with them? Where can you go for support when you need it, and to share your hard-earned insights with others who are going through what you went through?

The Technology

The Global Village team have considered the ways we could get people together, to form a community of parents around the world. Tapping into the power of the crowd for knowledge, the next obvious step is to use mobile technology.

After speaking to parents we have found that incidents with children can happen at any time: in the supermarket, a long car ride, the middle of the night. Using a mobile phone to access help is immediate and it doesn’t matter where you are, help can be available just by tapping your screen.

The Concept

We have the technology, but we know that not all parents are technology savvy, so the interface has to be easy for everyone to use. The app will contain easy to understand menus, and simple buttons to take you where you want to go, without confusing the process.

You’ll have a profile, which you can set up with as much or as little information as you want. You will also have a ‘friends list’, with people who are easily accessible, to contact or share with.

We will also feature stories of customs and practices from around the world. For example, women in some communities do not leave their newborn at all for the first 30 days of their lives. Instead they are cared for and looked after by the wider family, giving time for mother and baby to bond. Users can learn about the practices used in other cultures to prepare for childbirth; there is so much we can learn from each other.

A forum will be included in the app, and monitored by health care professionals who can provide you with assistance when you need it. You can also share your experiences and connect with other parents through the forums. Global Village will also include a database, which will be developed and curated by health experts, nurses and doulas. This information will be freely accessible any time you need it, and a search function will be included to help you find what you need quickly and simply.

Why Kickstarter?

Global Village is a great idea, but not a cheap one to implement, with app development meaning serious costs. We need to hire app developers and health professionals to help us deliver a system which is easy to use and that you can rely on. We also need to find and share stories of childbirth and child rearing practices from around the world, so that we can learn from each other.

We also need to promote Global Village. The idea is to develop a worldwide community, and we can’t do this without getting the word out. Kickstarter will allow us to hear from you and tailor the app to the needs of our customers. It allows us to show you how we are progressing, and for you to provide us with feedback on that progress.

The Global Village app is being designed for iOS and Android systems. This means that any device using these operating systems can use the Global Village. Check your user guide or device for info on your OS.

Risks and Challenges

  • Software Development: We have a prototype of the interface we will be using for Global Village. We need to make sure that with the abundance of information we will be providing, that parents can find what they need, when they need it. We also need to make sure that all the features are easy to use.
  • Experts: We need to be able to source experts in the fields of parental care, psychological care and child rearing.
  • Promotion: We want to make sure that we can get the word out to as many people around the word that we possibly can. We will need to hire a promotion and media expert who can help us spread the word through various forms of advertising.
